Upgrade to Wordpress 2.2 = Disaster

I should know better than to mess with something when it’s not broken. I thought upgrading to the latest version of Wordpress would be a good idea. Clearly I was mistaken.

Although I have everything sorted out now, at least I hope so; the upgrade was a total failure. I’m not sure if the templates are compatible with the 2.2 version, but once I put the new files in place everything went to hell.

The formatting was totally broken, text was all over the screen, the graphics were the wrong ones and all sorts of other horrors. Basically the blog was completely unreadable. I thought changing the theme would be the right course of action, but none were listed on the Presentation screen.

I gave up and downgraded the blog back to 2.1.2. This however didn’t fix the template problem, it was now the default one and none of the installed themes were listed on the Presentation screen. I tried to install some new ones but they weren’t listed either.

I renamed the default folder to default_old and renamed the folder of the theme I wanted to “Default”. Now Wordpress has no choice but to load my theme. Which it did. This really isn’t the right way to fix things, but for right now, we’ll go with it.

So, lesson learned. Make a backup copy of the Wordpress folder before upgrading! Yes I know it says that in the upgrade instructions, but who reads those?

If the Wordpress Presentation screen is blank, rename the Default Folder and name the folder of theme you want to use to Default. This gets around it. Or at least it has for me.
