The number of digital cameras shipped by manufacturers in any one year has, for the first time, broken through the 100m barrier, according to Japanese industry figures.

Statistics show that 100.37m units were shipped during 2007 – a 27.1% rise on the previous year, according to the Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA).

This increase was due to a far higher than expected growth in shipments of digital SLRs worldwide and a rise in shipments of compacts to areas such as North America and Asia.

CIPA predicts a 22.3% growth in DSLR sales in 2008, more than double the growth rate of digital compact shipments which are forecast to rise by 10.7%.

Demand for DSLRs continues to fuel the market for interchangeable lenses whose unit shipments shot up 43% in volume terms compared to the 2006 figure. Total unit sales of lenses in 2007 hit 12.51m.
