Looks like I’m not the only one talking about bigger hard drives and RAID arrays. Outdoor Photographer has an article which looks at different drive solutions for backing up your photo collection. They are also fans of the USB external drives which can be added to your system in just a minute or two. They also discuss some of the more powerful options.

Having a large number of large files is a good problem to have. A large file means lots of data and, ultimately, that means more options for creative expression. If you shoot RAW, you already know that gives you expanded control over the final results-but that control comes at the expense of file size. Plus, many cameras nowadays have built-in editing and “art filter” functions that, because you may save more than one version of the same file, once again, increase your need for storage space.

I think this white version looks pretty darn cool! Of course it makes me wonder, if Canon white lenses are the way they are to dissipate heat, why not make the whole camera white in the first place? Almost seems like this is an idea we should have had all along. Plus it has a certain winter feel to it.

Check out the pictures on CNET, we might be looking at the start of a new trend for the SLR…

It can be hard to get your lower-end SLR to stand out in the crowd of options these days, which is doubtless why Pentax on Tuesday announced a white version of its entry-level K2000 SLR and two bundled lenses.

The “very limited edition” model comes with white versions of the smc DA L 18-55mm F3.5-5.6 AL and smc DA L 50-200mm F4-5.6 AL lenses beginning in February, Pentax said. The company won’t announce prices until later, but the ordinary versions of those products cost about $800 today.

Just in time for Christmas here is a pretty good list of things to keep in mind when buying camera equipment. Besides some advice on what to look for before taking the plunge into any camera system there is advice on cameras and lenses for Wildlife photography, sports, portraits and landscapes. There is no end of envious components to add to your current setup.

When you buy a D-SLR, you’re choosing more than just a camera-you’re selecting a system of lenses and accessories, as well. Camera features like sensor size and resolution, metering and autofocus technology, exposure modes and so on are all important considerations; but you’ll also want to look beyond the camera at the range of additional options available for the models you’re evaluating.

Considering Sony has branched out in full force into the SLR with their Alpha series, especially the A900, who knows where this will leave the photography market for the year to come.

Sony plans to lay off 8,000 workers in its electronics business worldwide as part of a broader plan to trim expenses and tighten its focus in a difficult financial climate, the company said Tuesday.

The Japanese electronics and media giant, which currently has a full-time global workforce of 160,000, joins a long list of tech companies that have cut jobs and scaled back production.
