It doesn't get anymore typical Arizona than this! Huge Saguaro cacti
on the open plains. Part of the trip I took to AZ last year in 2006. We went
to the Saguaro National Forest to look at the cacti and they were very
impressive. They easily reach 20+ feet with large sprawling arms and they're
covered in short little needles. We came across one that died and you can
see the shell inside. The skeleton is a wild honeycomb pattern that supports
all that weight. Almost all the Saguaro will have bird holes in them. Birds
dart in and out all the time. They can nest right at the top and stay clear
of other animals.
A few of the ocotillo's were in bloom with their little red buds.
This was an impressive day. It was the epitome of the desert southwest and
then we got to see a wonderful sunset over the mountains.
